Port Royal a haven for pirates, sunk into
the sea in 1692, the result of a massive earthquake. A major part
of the town lies beneath the sea to this day. Used as the royal
navy’s main base in the Caribbean until
1905. Once ringed by six forts, Port Royal
is now a simple little fishing village.
Island tour includes:
- Rockfort Mineral Baths, formerly a heavily cannon
equipped fort in 1865, offering mineral bath facilities in warm
water pools.
- Tour the portion of the town of Port Royal that remains after the 1692
earthquake.
- Visit the fascinating Fort Charles built by the English in 1655
that originally was almost surrounded by water. The most famous
naval hero served at Fort Charles was Horatio Nelson. Visit the
Naval Museum in Fort Charles.
- The old artillery store, now called the Giddy
House due to "sinkage" at the angle of 45 degrees
as a result of an earthquake in 1907.

Spanish Town
just outside the Capital City of Kingston, was established as
the country’s Capital
City by the Spaniards
in 1534. Much of the town was burned in 1655 by conquering English
troops.
Island takes you on a tour of this fascinating town and other
en-route points of this historical interests as follows:
- Drive-by tour of Simon Bolivar’s statue in the
National Heroes Park commemorates a visit by Venezuelan
Hero to Jamaica.
- National Heroes Park dedicated to past Heroes and
the tombs of contemporary Heroes.
- A guided tour of the Institute of Jamaica, with exhibits forming part
of the natural history museum.
- Spanish Town square, where the cathedral
stands on the site of a Spanish Chapel destroyed by Cromwell’s
army. The present building is the second oldest foundation on
the island. In the square can be seen the façade of "Kings
House" destroyed by fire in 1925, a statue of Rodney sculpted
by Bacon, the remains of the Court House, the Folk Museum and
the National Archives.
- Devon House for lunch. A beautiful example of
Georgian architecture, has a grog shop, a coffee terrace, a
gourmet restaurant " The Devonshire" and craft shops
attached.
